Ulus is one of Ankara's most unique and oldest neighborhoods. It has a multi-layered history stretching from the Galatians to the Romans, from the Seljuks to the Ottomans and finally to the Republic. It contains Ankara Castle and most of the museums we will talk about in this guide. You can get acquainted with the historical texture of Ankara with a walk starting from the Zafer Anıtı (Victory Monument) in Ulus. We recommend visiting Hükümet Meydanı (Government Square), where you can see the Julianus Column, an obelisk belonging to the Roman period, the roads leading to Ankara Castle, the Jewish Quarter and the synagogue, the Saint Tereza Church, the Hamamönü Neighborhood, which has undergone a restoration that completely preserves the appearance of old Ankara. If you stop by Hamamönü, you may also want to consider experiencing the Anatolian bath tradition at the still active Karacabey Hamam, which dates back to 1440.
